The markets welcome guests Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On December 24, they close earlier at 5 p.m., and on Christmas Day, they open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For food lovers, the Gourmet Market at Place de la Montagne Verte stays open until January 4, 2026, extending the festive mood with hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Here’s what makes each of Colmar’s six markets special:
1. Place des Dominicains
Located beside the stunning 14th-century Dominican Church, this market radiates an enchanting glow under the stained-glass windows. It’s the place for local crafts, handmade ornaments, wooden toys, and delicate glassware. The scent of cinnamon and mulled wine fills the air as choirs perform festive tunes in the evenings.
2. Place Jeanne-d’Arc
This square celebrates traditional Alsatian heritage. You’ll find stalls selling foie gras, gingerbread, jams, cheeses, and regional wines — perfect for gourmet gifts or picnic treats. The rustic chalet-style booths evoke the feeling of a small Alsatian village.
3. Place de l’Ancienne Douane
Perhaps the most picturesque, this market spreads around the Koïfhus, the old customs house, and the “Little Venice” canals. Reflections of fairy lights dance on the water, creating an idyllic Christmas postcard scene. It’s ideal for photography lovers and features a large Christmas tree at its heart.
4. Place de la Cathédrale (Children’s Market)
A favorite for families, this market delights younger visitors with merry-go-rounds, toys, sweets, and storytelling corners. Santa often makes appearances here, and kids can mail their letters to him in the dedicated postbox — a charming touch that keeps the Christmas spirit alive.
5. Place de l’Ancienne Douane – Covered Market (Koïfhus Interior)
Inside the historic Koïfhus building, local artisans display fine art, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles. It’s a peaceful retreat from the winter chill and a great place to discover authentic Alsatian craftsmanship away from the crowds.
6. Place de la Montagne Verte – The Gourmet Market
A true paradise for food lovers, this cozy area offers regional dishes, warm soups, Alsatian wines, and Christmas desserts. Wooden chalets surround heated dining huts, inviting visitors to share a meal with friends while soaking in the festive atmosphere.
